Overweight and Out of Luck

Kyle was short of breath and it seemed as though his rebreather was not functioning properly. He checked his displays; everything seemed fine, but he felt panicky and uncoordinated. Panic began to creep into the edges of his tenuous hold on control. His dive buddies were nearby. He attempted to switch to bail out gas. There was a little more than 100 feet of seawater overhead. Signaling that he needed to ascend, panic truly set in as he began to flail about, struggling to get enough air even though he was now on open circuit. He could see that his buddies were aware of his problem and that they were trying to assist him. Still he was combative and unable to breathe.
